Invisalign

Set of clear aligners resting in an Invisalign® branded case on a blue backgroundBite alignment issues can rob you of your pleasant smile. Crooked, gapped, protruding, and overcrowded teeth impair you from displaying your smile. Additionally, these malocclusions affect how your teeth function. You may have problems chewing. You may even experience pain. Additionally, you can have problems cleaning the mouth. You may be vulnerable to cavities, decay, and gum infection. At The OC Smiles Family Dental, we have an Invisalign team that works to fabricate customized clear aligners to use in straightening your bite.

What is Invisalign?

We can describe Invisalign as a clear alternative to conventional braces. Dentists use Invisalign to shift teeth and get them to a targeted new position in order to create straight bites. Our dental office custom-molds the aligners, ensuring that they fit you precisely. With Invisalign, there are no metal brackets, wires, or bands. We use the Invisalign system to treat most of the malocclusions in adults and teens. This treatment is successful in addressing problems such as crowding and widely-spread teeth.

Invisalign can also help with more complex malocclusions such as underbites, overbites, and crossbites. Because the aligners are not visible, they do not draw undue attention as happens with traditional braces. Besides, the clear aligners can be removed, meaning that you take them out when drinking, brushing, flossing, and eating.

The Invisalign Process

We begin by obtaining 3D imaging or teeth molds that serve as mouth models for designing and making the Invisalign aligners. When fabricating the aligners, our dentist uses digital pictures obtained with an intraoral camera to design virtual models of your mouth. It is this model that is used to map out all the treatment steps so that you have aligners for all stages or phases of alignment. From the start to the end, you will have aligners that you change out every two weeks.

You start by wearing the aligners for 14 days, after which you switch to another series. Each day, you should wear the aligners for no less than 20 to 22 hours. Over several months, the aligners gently and slowly align the teeth.

The Benefits of Invisalign

Invisalign clear aligners are easy to wear and take care of. They are comfortable since the aligners are fabricated of smooth, clear, sturdy plastic. There are no brackets or wires that may snag the cheeks and lips. Invisalign is also versatile because they correct many issues such as underbites, overbites, crossbites, and gaps in teeth. These issues can result in pain, enamel erosion, decay, gum recession, and TMJ issues if not checked.

Anyone wearing conventional braces will be restricted to certain foods. However, when it comes to Invisalign, nothing is off limits. You just need to take out your trays before eating your favorite crunchy, chewy, or sticky foods. However, make sure you brush, floss, and cleanse your teeth prior to putting the aligners trays back in.

Traditional braces have metal brackets fitted on each tooth with wires threaded between the brackets and rubber bands to hold them. As such, the wires have to be adjusted regularly to ensure the teeth keep shifting in the right position. Invisalign does not have these, so they are comfortable in the mouth. Also, you do not need to make frequent visits to the dentist for adjustments.
