Dentures![]() What Are Dentures? When tooth loss occurs, dentures can replace the lost teeth, often without having to undergo surgery, except when you need implant-supported dentures. Traditional dentures, full or partials, are a cost-effective option for patients who struggle with a lack of teeth or feel self-conscious about their smile. A denture is a fixed or removable oral appliance that holds replacement teeth in the mouth. Dentures can get the support of a removable base that works by suction or permanent dental implants that are screwed or inserted in the jawbone. A removable partial denture may be secured in place with clasps or metal frameworks that attach to nearby teeth. Alternatively, partials can use a more discreet way of attachment known as precision attachments. Full DenturesA complete set of dentures has two removable arches of artificial teeth that are designed to fit along the lower and upper dental rows. They provide a solution to patients with most or all of the natural teeth missing. Full dentures are customized to fit the gums of the patient, therefore, a bonding material is not usually necessary. They utilize suction power to remain secured in place. Sometimes, a dentist can use an adhesive like special cream, adhesive strip, or glue to secure complete dentures to the gums. There may be some limitations to food when you wear full dentures; however, their grip is quite strong, and you can wash them at night. Full dentures can last five to 10 years before needing a replacement. Partial DenturesIf after tooth loss, you still retain most of your natural dentition, you may qualify for partial dentures. These detachable, artificial teeth are used to replace missing teeth and a dentist attaches them to a gum-colored fixture that secures the gums and teeth. Partials may be customized from various materials, hence creating realistic, yet comfortable teeth. Implant-Supported DenturesIf you need to turn around bone resorption or shrinking of the jawbone and need a more secure, long-lasting solution to lost teeth, you may consider implant-supported dentures. Instead of having individual dental implants, a dentist uses several screws that are placed surgically into the dental arches to provide support to the row of dentures. Implant-supported dentures promote bone health and help replace total tooth loss. A dentist can also remove them for adjustments as well as cleanings. To get tooth replacement solutions that allow you to regain the function and aesthetics of your teeth, you may consider dentures.
